Libya Launches Al-Rashad Gas Field, Adding 50M Cubic Feet Daily
The field lies south of the eastern city of Brega. It went into operation on Sunday, and the move is intended to strengthen gas supplies to power plants and industrial users.
National Oil Corporation (NOC) Chairman Masoud Suleiman announced the launch at a ceremony marking 65 years since Libya’s first crude oil shipment, the corporation said in a statement. He put the field’s output capacity at 50 million cubic feet of gas per day.
“Bringing this field into production is an important addition to the oil and gas sector, strengthens gas supplies and meets the needs of power plants and industrial sectors,” he added.
The anniversary dates to Oct. 25, 1961, when Libya sent its first crude cargo through the Brega oil terminal, opening the country’s oil exports to international markets.
Libya currently produces roughly 2.4 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day, according to the NOC. The corporation estimates the country’s proven reserves at between 53 trillion and 80 trillion cubic feet.
Libya sends natural gas to Europe by pipeline. It also depends on the fuel at home to generate electricity and supply industrial sectors.
