Bulgaria Runoff Set: Yotova 34.6 Percent, Gyurov 32.7 Percent in Tight Race

(MENAFN) Bulgaria’s presidential race is headed to a second round after no ticket cleared the 50% threshold needed to win outright.

Unofficial figures from polling firm Alpha Research, released by the national public broadcaster, put incumbent President Iliana Yotova and running mate Kiril Valchev in front with 34.6%. Former Prime Minister Andrey Gyurov and running mate Georgi Kandev trailed by under two points at 32.7%. Turnout was a weak 22.5%.

A separate tally by polling firm Myara showed a slightly wider gap, with Yotova at 35% and Gyurov at 31.9%. It put turnout at 22.2%.

The two front-runners will meet in a runoff on Nov. 1.
After polls closed, Yotova told reporters she was troubled by the sparse turnout. She thanked those who voted and those who backed her, then delivered a blunt message to the electorate. “Thinking that we can change anything in the country without voting is an illusion,” she said.

She vowed to step up her campaign and reach out to all Bulgarians more decisively. Yotova also argued that the country needs stable governance, not alliances stitched together between political parties.

Gyurov responded by challenging his rival to a public face-off before the vote. He said Bulgaria needs an active president who brings citizens together rather than dividing them. “I invite Yotova to an open, honest and civilized debate to present our views on how we would exercise our powers and how we would act when Bulgaria faces difficult choices,” he said.
