Three Royal Navy Crew Killed as Merlin Helicopter Crashes in Devon

(MENAFN) Three Royal Navy personnel have been killed after a Merlin Mk4 helicopter came down in a field near Okehampton in Devon, southwestern England, during a training exercise, officials confirmed Wednesday.

Devon and Cornwall Police said emergency services were dispatched to Sourton Down shortly after the crash, with road closures enforced along the A386 and A30 as crews worked the scene in the early hours of the morning.

In a formal statement, a Royal Navy spokesperson said: "It is with deep sadness that we can confirm three members of the Royal Navy have died during a helicopter training exercise. Our thoughts and sympathies are with their families and friends."

First Sea Lord Gen. Sir Gwyn Jenkins said he was "deeply saddened" by the incident, confirmed the aircraft as a Merlin Mk4, and warned the tragedy would be "a huge shock" to the naval community. He extended his gratitude to emergency services for their rapid response.

The crash occurred near military training areas on the edge of Dartmoor — a zone regularly used by helicopter crews for exercises. Investigations into the cause of the incident are expected to be launched in the coming days.
