UK, France to Host Multinational Meeting on Strait of Hormuz Security

(MENAFN) The UK and France are set to bring together military planners from over 30 countries this week in an effort to shape a coordinated plan aimed at reopening the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz.

The two-day gathering will begin on Wednesday at the UK’s Permanent Joint Headquarters in Northwood, located in North London. The meeting is designed to turn recent diplomatic understandings into an actionable military framework that could be activated when conditions permit, particularly after a stable ceasefire is established, according to reports.

Participants are expected to concentrate on key operational areas, including available military assets, command structures, and potential deployment strategies for forces in the region.

Tensions around the waterway escalated after Tehran imposed navigation restrictions on March 2 in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil and gas shipments. This followed joint military strikes carried out by the US and Israel against Iran on February 28.

Diplomatic efforts have continued in parallel. Talks between US and Iranian representatives were held in mid-April in Pakistan, following a 14-day ceasefire agreement that had been arranged earlier in the month and was due to expire on Wednesday evening in Washington time.

In the meantime, the US agreed to extend the ceasefire period after a request supported by Pakistani officials. As stated in the announcement, the extension was intended to give Tehran additional time to prepare a “unified proposal” following ongoing diplomatic engagement.

While preparations for further negotiations are reportedly ongoing, the overall situation remains uncertain.
