Xi Urges Deeper Strategic Ties Between China, Russia
The remarks were made during a meeting in Beijing with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, as reported by a state media outlet.
Xi emphasized that both nations, as major global powers and permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, should take on greater responsibility in maintaining international stability.
He also said that the “stability and certainty” of China–Russia relations are especially valuable in what he described as a shifting and uncertain global environment.
In a separate statement, Russia’s Foreign Ministry said Xi welcomed Lavrov’s visit and praised what it called the “unprecedented level” of development in bilateral relations.
The ministry also noted that Xi highlighted major progress achieved over the past decades following the signing of the Treaty on Good-Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation between Russia and China on July 16, 2001.
During the meeting, Lavrov conveyed greetings from Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is expected to make an official visit to China in the first half of the year.
According to the Russian statement, Lavrov also stressed the “guiding role” of high-level diplomatic engagement in advancing cooperation across all sectors of the bilateral relationship.
