AI Giant Anthropic’s Code Leak Risks Major Commercial Fallout

(MENAFN) AI company Anthropic has accidentally released its highly sensitive internal code, sparking widespread online replication and threatening serious commercial consequences for the Amazon-backed firm.

The developer of the Claude chatbot described the incident as a release problem “caused by human error, not a security breach,” according to reports.

Anthropic was labeled a “risk to national security” earlier this year by the US Defense Secretary after disputes with the Pentagon over the application of its AI technologies.

The leak involved over 500,000 lines of code tied to Claude Code, Anthropic’s AI coding assistant that helps users write and manage software through natural language commands. The material reportedly included unreleased features, performance analytics, and internal developer notes.

The code quickly spread online, with multiple versions uploaded to GitHub and replicated thousands of times within hours. Although Anthropic attempted to remove the files and issued takedown notices, the content had already circulated widely.

By revealing the “blueprints” of Claude Code, the leak may provide “bad actors” with a “road map” to bypass security safeguards or manipulate the tool to run hidden commands or access data without permission.

This follows a prior data exposure in February, when internal documents for Anthropic’s unreleased model, Claude Mythos, were left in a publicly accessible cache, revealing thousands of draft files.
