Israel’s Decision to Halt French Arms Purchases Seen as Largely Symbolic

(MENAFN) Israel’s recent decision to stop purchasing military equipment from France is being interpreted as largely symbolic rather than a major strategic shift, according to reports.

The Israeli Defense Ministry announced in late March that it would no longer import defense products from Paris, signaling a downgrade in relations and suggesting France is no longer viewed as a key ally.

However, an investigative report argued that the impact of this move is limited, noting that France has not been a major arms supplier to Israel. Data cited in the report shows that in 2024, French military exports to Israel totaled about €16.1 million (roughly $17.4 million).

By comparison, significantly larger defense deals were recorded with other countries during the same period, including €1.25 billion ($1.35 billion) in orders for Iraq, €718 million ($776 million) for the United Arab Emirates, and €170 million ($184 million) for Saudi Arabia.

The Israeli announcement followed developments related to the Iran conflict, including the transit of US aircraft through France. Earlier in March, the French military confirmed that such flights were permitted to use an airbase in Istres only after receiving assurances that they “would in no way participate in operations conducted by the United States in Iran.”

Despite these assurances, military analysts cited in the report suggested that even support or transport aircraft can play an indirect role in broader operations, even if they are not directly involved in combat missions.
