UN Declines to Comment on Potential Strait of Hormuz Initiative

(MENAFN) The United Nations on Monday addressed reports suggesting a potential UN-led initiative for the Strait of Hormuz, stating: "We will not be feeding this speculation," according to reports.

"We have seen the speculation in the media about an eventual UN-led initiative around the Strait of Hormuz," UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said during a news briefing. He added, "I can tell you that the Secretary-General remains in very frequent contact with senior officials in the region and beyond," emphasizing that the UN will continue to work discreetly.

Dujarric stressed that "the stakes are too high" and referenced the Black Sea grain initiative, noting that in that case "silence was the much better half of valor" during its preparation. He highlighted that Türkiye first arranged Russia-Ukraine talks in 2022 and later brokered the grain deal to facilitate exports of grain and fertilizers from Ukrainian ports amid the war, though Russia suspended participation in July 2023.

The Strait of Hormuz has become a major concern for energy markets since the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps imposed restrictions on most vessels following US-Israeli attacks on Iran beginning Feb. 28. Prior to the conflict, roughly 20 million barrels of oil passed through the strait daily, and disruptions have driven oil prices higher.

The US-Israeli attacks have killed more than 1,200 people, including then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, while Iran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf nations hosting US military forces.
