Zelensky welcomes G7 statement calling for immediate truce
In a statement Thursday, Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for the G7’s commitment to increase costs for Russia and those aiding its war efforts. He also welcomed the bloc’s condemnation of military support provided to Moscow by North Korea and allegedly Iran, along with reports of dual-use component transfers from China.
“I appreciate the willingness to support Ukraine’s energy system amid Russia’s intensified attacks, as well as to use frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine,” Zelenskyy said, thanking the leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, the US, and the EU for maintaining what he called a “principled approach.”
He emphasized that international pressure on Moscow must continue “after each Russian strike and brutality,” urging allies not to ease sanctions or diplomatic efforts.
The G7 statement, released after a two-day summit, reaffirmed long-term backing for Ukraine’s sovereignty and energy resilience while calling for urgent steps to stop recent Russian assaults on critical infrastructure.
Moscow has rejected proposals to freeze the current front lines, insisting instead on what it describes as a “permanent resolution” to the conflict on its own terms.
