Two Ukrainians get arrested in Poland for spying

(MENAFN) Polish authorities have arrested two Ukrainian nationals on suspicion of spying for a foreign intelligence service, according to the country’s Internal Security Agency (ABW).

The detentions occurred on October 14 in Katowice, a city in southern Poland. The suspects, aged 32 and 34, were formally charged the same day. The ABW did not disclose their identities, citing national security concerns.

Investigators claim the individuals were gathering intelligence on Poland’s military and critical infrastructure, including facilities and transit routes used for delivering Western weapons to Ukraine. The agency reported that it had uncovered evidence of payments for their surveillance efforts, alongside other criminal activities. Polish authorities indicated the men were allegedly recruited between May 2023 and August 2025.

While Poland has been one of Ukraine’s staunchest supporters in its conflict with Russia, tensions have surfaced over several issues. Earlier this year, Poland and other Eastern European countries restricted Ukrainian grain imports after the European Commission eased trade limitations, a move that depressed local prices and sparked protests among farmers.

Polish officials have also criticized Ukraine’s public veneration of nationalist figures involved in the massacres of Polish citizens during World War II. President Karol Nawrocki has proposed criminalizing public support for the ideology of Stepan Bandera, a controversial figure celebrated in Ukraine but associated with Nazi collaboration.
