Kremlin affirms security focus following nuclear missile test

(MENAFN) Russia emphasized on Monday that it remains committed to safeguarding its national security, following the test of a nuclear-powered missile the day before. The demonstration of the Burevestnik missile came as US President Donald Trump suggested that Moscow should prioritize ending the war in Ukraine instead.

On Sunday, Russian President Vladimir Putin described the missile tests as “decisive,” with Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov reporting that the missile stayed airborne for roughly 15 hours, covering a distance of 14,000 kilometers (8,700 miles). Putin characterized the Burevestnik, first revealed in 2018, as “unique” and capable of “unlimited range.”

Commenting on the tests while en route to Japan, Trump sought to minimize their impact, noting that the US already has a nuclear submarine positioned “right off their shores” that does not require such long-range capabilities. He added, “He (Putin) ought to get the war ended, a war that should have taken one week is now in its, soon, fourth year, that’s what he ought to do instead of testing missiles.”

Responding to Trump’s remarks, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that the US president’s perspective is his own and described it as “important.” Peskov argued that the Burevestnik tests should not damage Moscow-Washington relations and reaffirmed that Russia acts based on its national interests while remaining open to minimal dialogue with the United States.

“Russia is consistently working to ensure its own security. It is in line with this objective that the development of new weapons systems, including the system just mentioned, is taking place,” Peskov said. He added that ensuring security is especially vital amid what he described as a “militaristic mood” seen “primarily among Europeans.” “Against this backdrop, Russia must do everything possible to ensure its own security,” he emphasized.

Peskov also addressed Russian presidential aide Kirill Dmitriev’s recent visit to the United States for discussions with American officials, calling such “informal contacts” significant. “This is a small step on a long, long road, but that's how it needs to be approached. It's necessary work, but it requires a lot of patience,” he noted.
