Investigations indicate that Louvre robbery might be ‘inside job’

(MENAFN) French authorities probing the recent robbery at the Louvre Museum have uncovered evidence suggesting the theft involved insider cooperation. Investigators reportedly found messages and recordings indicating that museum staff had communicated with suspected gang members prior to the break-in.

A source close to the investigation told reporters, “We have found digital forensic evidence that shows there was cooperation with one of the museum’s security guards and the thieves.

Sensitive information was passed on about the museum’s security, which is how they were aware of the breach.”

The robbery occurred last week when four masked men, armed with a chainsaw, entered the museum and stole eight pieces from France’s crown jewels, valued at around $102 million. The burglars reportedly used a crane to access a balcony and smashed a window of the Galerie d’Apollon while visitors were present. The operation reportedly lasted only seven minutes, with the thieves escaping via a furniture elevator and fleeing on motorbikes.

Investigators have collected more than 150 DNA samples from items left at the scene, including helmets, gloves, and tools. Louvre director Laurence des Cars described the theft as a “terrible failure,” noting that a nearby camera had been “pointing in the wrong direction.”

Some of the museum’s most valuable jewels have since been moved to the Bank of France for security.

On Sunday, two men in their 30s were reportedly arrested near Paris, including one at Charles de Gaulle Airport as he attempted to board a flight to Algeria. Authorities confirmed the arrests but warned that media leaks could impede the work of the 100 investigators involved. There is currently no indication that any of the stolen crown jewels have been recovered. French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez praised police efforts while emphasizing that the investigation must proceed “in accordance with judicial secrecy.”
