Gas Explosion in Madrid Leaves 25 Injured
The detonation occurred around 3 p.m. local time (1300 GMT) and impacted a commercial property that had been converted into housing, the structure above it, as well as an adjacent bar.
Carlos Marín de la Bárcena, head of Madrid’s Fire Department, confirmed that the incident was caused by a gas explosion.
However, the precise type of gas, its origin, or the specific spot where it began has not yet been clarified.
Authorities evacuated the building, and Madrid’s Deputy Mayor Inmaculada Sanz stated that residents of the nine apartments in the three-story complex may need to be relocated for several days due to "significant damage to the structural flooring between the ground and first floors."
Sanz, who also oversees Security and Emergencies, explained that the City Council is coordinating with Samur Social to provide temporary accommodation for displaced residents. Municipal engineers will now carry out a detailed structural inspection of the premises.
Because of the fragility of the structure, which prevents the safe use of heavy machinery, firefighters have been operating manually and managed to rescue four individuals trapped beneath the wreckage.
Sanz further noted that most of the debris has already been removed, and it now “seems unlikely” that additional people remain under the rubble.
