Nepal Names Former Chief Justice as New Interim PM

(MENAFN) Sushila Karki, Nepal’s former chief justice, was sworn in as the head of an interim government on Friday evening, days after the resignation of outgoing Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, who stepped down on Tuesday.

President Ram Chandra Poudel formally appointed Karki to the role, administering her oath of office during a ceremony attended by foreign diplomats and other dignitaries.

Karki, 73, will assume full control of all ministerial portfolios under the interim arrangement. As outlined in the official letter of appointment, her administration is tasked with organizing national elections within a six-month timeframe.

A follow-up statement issued by the president’s office confirmed that Nepal’s House of Representatives will be formally dissolved at 11 p.m. local time on Friday. The country will head to the polls on March 5, 2026.

Karki’s elevation to the post follows a political breakthrough on Friday, when major political factions and protest groups—behind demonstrations in Kathmandu and other cities on September 8 and 9—came to an agreement, clearing the way for her appointment.

Notably, Karki remains the only woman to have ever held the position of chief justice in Nepal’s Supreme Court.
