Japan's Elderly Population Climbs to Historic 29.4 Percent

(MENAFN) Japan's elderly population has reached an all-time high, now comprising 29.4% of the nation's total population, according to new data released Sunday by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. This proportion is the largest among countries with populations exceeding 40 million.

The government report shows that the number of individuals aged 65 and older has climbed to 36.19 million, with 9.3 million still actively employed. This marks the 21st consecutive year of growth in the senior workforce. Notably, one in seven workers in Japan is now elderly.

Of Japan's senior population, 15.68 million are men, while women make up a larger share, with 20.51 million.

A recent change to the country’s industrial safety and health law, introduced in May, mandates businesses to enhance working conditions for older employees, as aging increases the likelihood of workplace accidents.

Looking ahead, the National Institute of Population and Social Security Research projects that the senior population will grow to 39.28 million by 2040, representing 34.8% of Japan's total population. This increase will largely be driven by the aging of Japan's second baby boom generation, born between 1971 and 1974.

On the global stage, Italy ranks second in terms of elderly population share, with 25.1% of its citizens aged 65 or older, followed by Germany at 23.7%. Japan also stands out for its particularly high proportion of people aged 75 and above, which currently stands at 17.2%, outpacing other nations with large elderly populations.
