Over forty countries call on UN to act after Russian drones violated Polish airspace

(MENAFN) Over 40 countries, including the United States, called Friday for stronger international measures at the United Nations following Russian drones’ violation of Polish airspace, labeling the incident a “destabilizing escalation” that threatens regional stability.

Polish Secretary of State Marcin Bosacki presented the joint statement ahead of a UN Security Council meeting requested by Warsaw. “For the first time in its history, Poland has decided to request the convening of an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council,” he said, calling the drone incursion “yet another flagrant violation of international law and the Charter of the United Nations committed by the Russian Federation while attacking the territory of Ukraine.”

Bosacki warned that the drones posed “a real threat to the civilian population, infrastructure, and aviation safety” and highlighted the unprecedented scale of the operation across NATO and EU airspace since the war in Ukraine began in 2022. He described the provocation as “profoundly disrespectful toward the collective and tireless efforts of the international community to bring an end to the war and to restore peace and stability in accordance with international law,” and thanked South Korea for presiding over the meeting.

Poland reiterated its call for Russia to cease aggression, avoid further provocations, and comply with UN Charter principles. Earlier this week, Poland defined the drone incursions during overnight Russian-Ukrainian airstrikes as an “act of aggression.”

The Russian Defense Ministry denied targeting Polish territory, stating the strikes were aimed at Kyiv’s military-industrial facilities in western Ukraine.
