Russian Swimmer Disappears After Istanbul Strait Swim

(MENAFN) Russian athlete Nikolay Svechnikov, 29, vanished during Sunday’s 37th Istanbul Cross-Continental Swimming Race, prompting an urgent search effort, according to the Russian Consulate General.

The open-water competition, stretching 6.5 kilometers across the Bosphorus Strait, brought together 2,820 swimmers from 81 countries. Svechnikov was among more than 400 registered participants in the high-profile international event, organized by the Turkish National Olympic Committee.

The swimmer failed to reach the designated finish line in Kuruçeşme, triggering a coordinated search by Turkey’s Marine Police and Coast Guard.

“Relatives of the citizen have been informed about the incident. Turkish emergency services are conducting search operations,” the Russian Consulate General stated.

Search teams are concentrating their efforts on the swimmer’s route from Kanlıca to Kuruçeşme, while also expanding surveillance across broader areas of the strait.

Officials confirmed that the Russian diplomatic mission has formally submitted a request to Turkish authorities. The consulate also noted it is maintaining ongoing communication with local officials and actively monitoring the situation.

The annual cross-continental race, which links the continents of Asia and Europe via the Bosphorus, has gained international acclaim, attracting both elite and amateur athletes from around the globe.
